Civil engineering is about designing and building the infrastructure that keeps everyday life running. They work on projects such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and water systems that communities across Malawi rely on.
A typical day involves creating designs and technical drawings, carrying out calculations to ensure structures are safe and stable, and visiting construction sites to follow progress. Civil engineers also work closely with other professionals, including architects, builders, and surveyors.
To become a civil engineer in Malawi, students usually study subjects like mathematics, physics, and science in school before applying to university. This is followed by a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, which typically takes 4–5 years. Some engineers choose to continue with further studies to specialise in specific areas.
The role is important both locally and nationally. They support economic development by improving transport and connectivity across the country. Civil engineering offers the opportunity to make a visible and lasting difference in how people live.
Tracey works as a Civil Engineer, where she helps design and build infrastructure projects that people use in their everyday lives. She enjoys creating practical solutions and contributing to projects that make a difference.
Her journey to becoming a civil engineer started at Jacaranda School. During her time at the school, Tracey developed both her technical skills and her confidence. With support from teachers and a strong learning environment, she discovered an interest in engineering and began to see new possibilities for her future.
After graduating, Tracey continued her studies at University of Nairobi, where she specialised in civil engineering. Through her studies and early work experience, she gradually built her path into the field.
